October. Nashigasaka City Hall, the basement.
The main building's Industry Division wants an inspection visit...
A factory in Niihama City, Ehime.
A business trip!! I'm going!!
Inspection = looking = vacation!!
An inspection report... my name gets known at the main building!!
I've got school, so I'll hold the fort. Paid hourly.
I'm taking paid leave that week. More of my pilgrimage.
Page 2
Across the Seto Ohashi Bridge: Niihama, Ehime.
...Swim ring?
Inspection, right? I'll inspect the sea.
Niihama is a factory town that grew up with the Besshi Copper Mine.
Mining began in 1691 and ended in 1973. 283 years.
So basically, it's a town with good food!!
LISTEN TO ME!!
Page 3
Hey, you made it!! You're the extra hands!!
Huh?
Nice shoulders!! Go get changed, quick!!
N-no... we're here to inspect...!!
Lunch is on us!!
Lunch boxes...
Page 4
Kid, you sure can haul!!
Inspectors? Sorry, we're short-handed.
If you wanna look, look while you work.
...The same numbers, on two sheets?
Measure it, write it on the check sheet, then in the daily log too.
The same numbers TWICE!?
Page 5
Every part number gets measured in different spots.
Four hundred kinds of check sheets alone.
And every night, I type all those sheets back in.
The same numbers... three times.
THREE TIMES!?
Page 6
If you brought in a system, the retyping...
Millions of yen, months of work. Won't be ready by tomorrow.
We're closed for the three festival days, so it ships tomorrow.
This year my grandson carries the float for the first time.
Note: The Niihama Taiko Festival (Oct. 16-18) is famous for its taikodai: giant drum floats of about three tons, carried on the shoulders of some 150 bearers.
Tonight's practice... with this pile, no way.
LUNCH!!
Page 7
SO GOOOD!!
Kid, you hauled for two this morning!!
Is this heaven!?
Working on a business trip?
...Long story.
There's just one hell here!!
The paper with the same number twice!!
Page 8
100 pieces this afternoon. 200 lines to write.
TWO HUNDRED LINES!!
Cutting retyping... that's report material!!
Less time writing means each piece goes faster.
Kid. You're in.
For souvenirs. At my hourly rate.
Page 9
Any waste on the floor, you speak right up.
Well then, you're on this trip till tomorrow evening.
Cut the waste... No double work...
No double work!! Don't write it, and the work is ZERO!!
Page 10
No paper, no double work!!
Even the boss said "Speak up about waste"!!
Measure it, next one!! No more writing, period!!
...No retyping = half the hours...!?
Well, if the boss said so...
That's forty seconds faster per piece.
WHOOOA!!
Page 11
I'll take ALL the paper!!
We don't have to write!?
Huh... the sheets I retype...
All gone!! You can go home tonight!!
Page 12
Fast... we're twice as far as usual!!
Genda, give us a hand over here too!!
You got it!!
It really is fast...
Page 13
Home by five... how many years has it been?
I can go watch my grandson practice.
Heh heh...
Kid, carry the float at the festival too!!
Leave it to me!!
Page 14
Don't need the daily log either. It's the same every day anyway.
...You sure about this?
Take it all away!!
Now double work is ZERO!!
Page 15
Subject: "Proposal cuts man-hours 30%"
My name gets known at the main building...!!
—But that order form had one line in it.
Page 16
Here ya go, double!!
Next day, evening.
Inspection certificates, please?
In-spection... what?
...The paper's all...
We can't accept parts without records.
I'll wait until the first shipment tomorrow morning.
Page 17
Records are a part's ID card, see.
When, who, on which machine. What the measurements were.
Traceable later. That's traceability.
Cutting double work don't mean not writing.
It means doing it once.
......
Re-measure it all tonight... on festival eve...
Page 18
Ch-Chief!?
A "30% cut" usually means something got left out.
We are deeply, truly sorry for this.
Genda. I will join you.
I can make a sheet: scan a QR, enter once, get both.
Till 8 p.m. Then, labor law.
Note: Shota is 16. Japan's Labor Standards Act bars workers under 18 from late-night work, so he logs off early.
Page 19
Forget the festival eve, there's always next year!!
—The night before the festival.
Scan the QR, enter once. Certificate and log both come out.
I printed labels for every part number!!
These calipers... are heavy...
Genda, two thousand to go.
Can't measure on an empty stomach.
Page 20
Enter once, get both. How handy.
...You're fast, Chief...
Received, all in order.
Dawn.
Genda. We took a whole night from these craftsmen.
We repay it with our shoulders. All three festival days.
Carrying THREE TONS!?
Page 21
October 16. The Niihama Taiko Festival.
Look, that's my grandson.
The report: not an "inspection," an "experience"...
One entry, all done. Manabe made it too!
This was supposed to be an EASY TRIP!!
Nice inspection experience, huh?
